How do I convert M4A audio to WMA without quality loss?

Is converting M4A to WMA a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
Why will some of my M4A files not convert?

DRM. A subset of M4A files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. M4A hides two very different things behind one extension — lossy AAC and lossless ALAC — and non-Apple hardware support is inconsistent.
Will the WMA play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. M4A is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; WMA needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on M4A. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
What bitrate does the WMA file use?

Default is 192 kbps for lossy WMA; pass-through for lossless WMA. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 64-96 kbps for spoken-word audiobooks (transparent for voice, halves the file size).
Will going from M4A to WMA reduce my audio quality?

If M4A is lossy and WMA is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the WMA file is no better than the M4A — you can't recover information that's already been thrown away. If M4A is lossless and WMA is lossy, expect the WMA codec to recompress; at 192 kbps this is transparent for most content.
Does the M4A to WMA converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?
