WMV to FLAC Conversion FAQ
How do I convert a WMV file to FLAC?
+
Upload your WMV file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the WMV → FLAC pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
Does converting WMV to FLAC improve the audio quality?
+
No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The WMV already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?
+
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WMV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Why will some of my WMV files not convert?
+
DRM. A subset of WMV files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not.
Is the WMV to FLAC converter free?
+
Yes — basic WMV → FLAC conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
How big a WMV file can I convert to FLAC?
+
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per WMV file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the WMV source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the FLAC format allows.
Will conversion change the content of my WMV?
+
Conversion preserves all information that both WMV and FLAC can represent. Format-specific features that the FLAC format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Can I convert many WMV files to FLAC at once?
+
Yes — drop multiple WMV files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Does the WMV to FLAC converter work on phones and tablets?
+
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Which browsers does the WMV to FLAC converter support?
+
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.
Are my WMV files kept private?
+
Yes — uploaded WMV files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window.
What if the FLAC download doesn't start automatically?
+
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network fails mid-download, you can re-trigger from the result page without re-uploading the WMV.
