How do I convert AMR audio to WAV without quality loss?

Does converting AMR to WAV improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The AMR already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless WAV preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because WAV will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. WAV is the correct format for editing, mastering and archiving, because it can be re-encoded any number of times without accumulating artefacts. AMR destroys music: its 8 kHz bandwidth removes everything above telephone frequencies, and no amount of re-encoding brings it back.
Why does music sound so poor in this conversion?

Because one side of it is a speech codec rather than a music codec. It models the human vocal tract and discards everything outside telephone bandwidth, which is fine for a voice memo and destructive for anything with instruments in it. Converting away from it cannot restore the missing frequencies — they were never encoded in the first place.
What bitrate does the WAV file use?

Default is 192 kbps for lossy WAV; pass-through for lossless WAV. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 64-96 kbps for spoken-word audiobooks (transparent for voice, halves the file size).
Will going from AMR to WAV reduce my audio quality?

If AMR is lossy and WAV is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the WAV file is no better than the AMR — you can't recover information that's already been thrown away. If AMR is lossless and WAV is lossy, expect the WAV codec to recompress; at 192 kbps this is transparent for most content.
Does the AMR to WAV converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?

How long does converting a 10-hour audiobook AMR to WAV take?

Same-codec re-mux: 10-30 seconds. Re-encode to a different codec: typically 10-20% of source duration, so a 10-hour audiobook finishes in 60-120 minutes. Chapter markers survive the round-trip and split cleanly.
