GIF to MKV Conversion FAQ
How do I convert a GIF file to MKV?
+
Upload your GIF file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the GIF → MKV pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
How long will the MKV be if I convert a single GIF?
+
Ten seconds by default, and adjustable. A still image has no duration of its own, so the converter holds the frame for a set length and encodes that; supply several images and they become a slideshow at whatever interval you set. Add an audio track and the duration follows the audio instead. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold.
Can I add music or narration to the MKV?
+
Yes — upload an audio file alongside the images and it becomes the video’s soundtrack, with the duration following the audio rather than a fixed per-image interval. Without an audio track the MKV is silent, which some upload targets accept and others reject outright. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file.
Is the GIF to MKV converter free?
+
Yes — basic GIF → MKV conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
How big a GIF file can I convert to MKV?
+
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per GIF file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the GIF source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the MKV format allows.
Will conversion change the content of my GIF?
+
Conversion preserves all information that both GIF and MKV can represent. Format-specific features that the MKV format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Can I convert many GIF files to MKV at once?
+
Yes — drop multiple GIF files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Does the GIF to MKV converter work on phones and tablets?
+
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Which browsers does the GIF to MKV converter support?
+
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.
Are my GIF files kept private?
+
Yes — uploaded GIF files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window.
What if the MKV download doesn't start automatically?
+
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network fails mid-download, you can re-trigger from the result page without re-uploading the GIF.
How long does GIF to MKV conversion take?
+
Typically seconds for small files, a minute or two for files near the size cap. Server-side pipeline runs on dedicated workers — your laptop CPU isn't the bottleneck.
