How do I convert WAV audio to AIFF without quality loss?

Is WAV to AIFF genuinely lossless?

Yes. Both formats keep every sample, so decoding the AIFF returns a bit-identical copy of the audio inside the WAV. Nothing is quantised, nothing is discarded, and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely without accumulating artefacts. What changes is the file size and which software will open it. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity.
Can I tag the AIFF with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WAV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AIFF carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly.
Will the AIFF play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. WAV is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; AIFF needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on WAV. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Will a very large WAV file upload successfully?

Free accounts cap at 100 MB per file, and WAV sources run large because the format carries substantial per-chunk overhead on top of the video data. Premium lifts the cap considerably. If the file is split into numbered parts because of the format ceiling, upload them together and they are treated as one job. WAV is enormous — roughly 10 MB per stereo minute at CD quality — and the classic format has a 4 GB ceiling and no room for proper tags.
What bitrate does the AIFF file use?

Default is 192 kbps for lossy AIFF; pass-through for lossless AIFF. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 64-96 kbps for spoken-word audiobooks (transparent for voice, halves the file size).
Will going from WAV to AIFF reduce my audio quality?

If WAV is lossy and AIFF is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the AIFF file is no better than the WAV — you can't recover information that's already been thrown away. If WAV is lossless and AIFF is lossy, expect the AIFF codec to recompress; at 192 kbps this is transparent for most content.
