GIF to WebP Conversion FAQ
How do I convert GIF to WebP without losing image quality?
+
Upload your GIF file, then our converter applies format-aware quality optimization for WebP output. For lossless formats (PNG, TIFF, BMP) we preserve every pixel; for lossy formats (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download.
How much quality will I lose going from GIF to WebP?
+
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WebP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the GIF as the master and regenerate the WebP from it whenever you need a new size. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
What about EXIF metadata when converting GIF to WebP?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the WebP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of GIF files to WebP at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution and dimensions will my WebP file have?
+
Default behaviour is 1:1 — your WebP output has the same pixel dimensions as the source GIF. Use a separate /resize-image/ step after conversion if you need to downscale or upscale as part of the workflow.
How small can the WebP file get without visible artifacts?
+
For JPG / WebP, quality 75-85 typically gets the file 60-80% smaller than the source GIF with no visible difference at normal viewing distance. For lossless targets (PNG, TIFF), expect smaller savings — usually 5-30% via better deflate / LZW compression.
Are my GIF files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded GIF files are processed on our own servers and are never viewed or shared. Uploads and converted images are deleted automatically about 24 hours after conversion. The full privacy policy is at /privacy/.
Why is my converted WebP file bigger / smaller than I expected?
+
A GIF file with strong compression (e.g. heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to a lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless GIF often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content (photos compress differently from line art).
