How do I convert XLS to PDF for sharing or printing?

Upload the XLS and the converter turns it into a PDF you can share or print. Documents keep the page size, margins and page breaks saved in the file, and a plain text file, which has none, is laid out on A4 pages. Pictures such as JPG or PNG are each placed on a page.
Can I still edit the content after converting XLS to PDF?

Not the way you edit the XLS. The PDF is a delivery format: it fixes the layout so it renders identically everywhere, which is exactly why it resists editing. Keep the XLS as the working copy and regenerate the PDF whenever the content changes — round-tripping back out of PDF always loses something. PDF is Adobe’s Portable Document Format from 1993, standardised as ISO 32000 and now the universal fixed-layout document.
Is the older binary Office format still a safe bet?

It opens everywhere, but it is a compatibility choice rather than a good one. The binary formats predate the XML packages, carry macro payloads that many mail servers strip on sight, and are being steadily deprecated by Microsoft itself. Use them when a specific piece of old software demands them, and the XML format otherwise. PDF is deliberately hard to edit, and a scanned PDF contains no text at all until OCR has been run over it.
Will the PDF open directly in a browser?

Yes, and the XLS would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for PDF and none for XLS, so an XLS link forces a download while a PDF renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application. A PDF looks byte-for-byte identical on every machine and every printer, which is why contracts, invoices and academic papers all live in it.
Do my spreadsheet formulas survive the conversion to PDF?

The values do; the formulas do not. An XLS stores both the calculation and its current result, and PDF has nowhere to keep the calculation — so what you get is a snapshot of the numbers as they stood at conversion time. Anything that depended on the sheet recalculating stops updating from that point on. XLS is still what a great deal of legacy financial and government reporting tooling emits and expects.
Will the XLS to PDF conversion keep my fonts and formatting?

Headings, lists, tables and images are kept, and the fonts used are embedded in the PDF, so it looks the same in every viewer. A font that is not installed on our conversion servers (Calibri, for example) is replaced with a similar one, so line breaks can shift. An image file becomes a PDF page that shows the image.
Can I merge multiple XLS files into one PDF?

Not on this page: each XLS you upload becomes a separate PDF. To combine them, convert them here first, then join the PDF files into one document with /pdf-merge/.
What page size and orientation will the PDF use?

A document keeps the page size and orientation saved in it, so a Word file set up as US Letter landscape stays that way. A plain text file has no page setup and comes out as A4 portrait. The converter has no page size or orientation setting, so change the page setup in the original file before converting if you need something different.
Is the PDF searchable (selectable text)?

Yes when the XLS contains real text (DOCX, ODT, HTML, TXT). Image-based XLS produces an image-only PDF — to make it searchable, use /pdf-ocr/ after conversion to run optical character recognition.
Can I password-protect the PDF after conversion?

Not on this site. The converter has no password or permission settings, and epub.to does not have a PDF password tool. Download the PDF and add a password in a PDF editor that supports it, such as Adobe Acrobat.
How big will the PDF file be?

It depends mostly on the pictures. A text document usually gives a small PDF, because only the text and the parts of the fonts it uses are stored, while photos and scanned pages make up most of the size of a larger file. The converter has no compression setting; to shrink a finished PDF, run it through /pdf-compress/.
