MKV to WMV Conversion FAQ

How do I convert an MKV file to WMV?
+
Upload your MKV file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the MKV → WMV pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
They cannot stay selectable, because WMV has no soft-subtitle stream to hold them. There are two ways out: burn them into the video during conversion, which makes them permanent and unstyleable, or export them as a separate .srt alongside the WMV for the player to load. The converter tells you which it did rather than dropping them silently. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Not dependably. MKV stores multiple audio streams as first-class tracks, but WMV playback support past the first track is inconsistent, so most players will only ever expose one. Choose the track you actually want before converting; the others are better extracted to their own files than left in a container that hides them. MKV is the archival container of choice because it stores unlimited audio tracks, soft subtitles, chapter markers and cover art in one file.
Because a lot of hardware never learned anything newer and never will. DVD players, in-car head units, camcorder playback modes, industrial displays and plenty of broadcast ingest equipment accept WMV and nothing else. The conversion is a deliberate step down in efficiency, bought in exchange for working on a device that has no other option. WMV compresses well for its age and remains the format PowerPoint, older Windows screen recorders and corporate media libraries expect.
Yes — basic MKV → WMV conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per MKV file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the MKV source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the WMV format allows.
Conversion preserves all information that both MKV and WMV can represent. Format-specific features that the WMV format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Yes — drop multiple MKV files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.
Yes — uploaded MKV files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window.
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network fails mid-download, you can re-trigger from the result page without re-uploading the MKV.

MKV

MKV (Matroska) can hold unlimited video, audio, and subtitle tracks in a single file, ideal for movies.

WMV

WMV is Microsoft video from the Windows Media era, compact for its time but awkward on anything other than Windows.
