MKV to M4R Conversion FAQ
How do I convert an MKV file to M4R?
+
Upload your MKV file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the MKV → M4R pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
Is converting MKV to M4R a second round of lossy compression?
+
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the M4R encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the M4R from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. The payload is AAC, conventionally capped at 40 seconds, which is the longest tone iOS will accept.
Can I tag the M4R with artist and album information?
+
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. M4R carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. M4R drops straight into the iOS Sounds list via Finder or iTunes with no further processing.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting MKV to M4R?
+
It is folded down to stereo, because M4R has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. M4R is Apple-only and length-limited; anything over 40 seconds is silently rejected by the phone.
Is the MKV to M4R converter free?
+
Yes — basic MKV → M4R conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
How big an MKV file can I convert to M4R?
+
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per MKV file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the MKV source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the M4R format allows.
Will conversion change the content of my MKV?
+
Conversion preserves all information that both MKV and M4R can represent. Format-specific features that the M4R format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Can I convert many MKV files to M4R at once?
+
Yes — drop multiple MKV files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Does the MKV to M4R converter work on phones and tablets?
+
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Which browsers does the MKV to M4R converter support?
+
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.
Are my MKV files kept private?
+
Yes — uploaded MKV files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window.
What if the M4R download doesn't start automatically?
+
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network fails mid-download, you can re-trigger from the result page without re-uploading the MKV.
