VOB to AVI Conversion FAQ

How do I convert a VOB file to AVI?
+
Upload your VOB file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the VOB → AVI pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
They cannot stay selectable, because AVI has no soft-subtitle stream to hold them. There are two ways out: burn them into the video during conversion, which makes them permanent and unstyleable, or export them as a separate .srt alongside the AVI for the player to load. The converter tells you which it did rather than dropping them silently. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
Almost always DRM. Some VOB files are encrypted at the bitstream level by the store or software that issued them, and an encrypted stream cannot be decoded by us or by anything else without the licence key. Files you recorded, exported or downloaded unprotected convert normally; a licensed purchase will not, and no converter can honestly promise otherwise. VOB is split across files, may be CSS-encrypted, and carries navigation packets that confuse general-purpose players.
It may not. VOB is decoded by dedicated silicon on phones, tablets and TVs, which is why it plays without flattening the battery. AVI typically falls back to software decoding on the same hardware — higher CPU load, a warmer device, and dropped frames on 4K material. For a device target, VOB is the safer container to stay in.
It is downmixed to stereo, because AVI has no dependable multichannel path. The fold-down uses the standard ITU coefficients so dialogue in the centre channel stays intelligible and the surrounds come in at reduced level rather than vanishing. Anything that relied on discrete channel placement is gone after that.
Only if a specific piece of equipment demands the target. Both formats come from the same pre-H.264 era, so neither conversion buys efficiency, quality or future-proofing — it buys compatibility with one particular device. If the goal is to keep the footage usable long-term, convert to a current container instead of sideways.
Yes — basic VOB → AVI conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per VOB file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the VOB source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the AVI format allows.
Conversion preserves all information that both VOB and AVI can represent. Format-specific features that the AVI format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Yes — drop multiple VOB files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.

VOB

VOB is the container on a video DVD, holding MPEG-2 video, audio, and subtitles, and it may be encrypted.

AVI

AVI files can contain both audio and video data, widely implemented but with larger file sizes.
