MKV to HLS Conversion FAQ
How do I convert an MKV file to HLS?
+
Upload your MKV file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the MKV → HLS pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions.
Will the HLS play in a browser when the MKV would not?
+
Yes, and that is usually the whole reason for the conversion. An MKV embedded in a web page either shows a broken player or forces a download, because browsers ship no decoder for it. HLS plays inline through the native HTML5 video element with no plugin and no external application. HLS adapts to the viewer’s bandwidth in real time and is the only streaming format Safari and iOS support natively.
Is HLS a container or a codec, and does that change what I get back?
+
It changes what to expect from the output file. One side of this conversion names an encoding rather than a wrapper, so what comes back is that bitstream inside whichever container suits it best — normally MP4 or MKV. The extension reflects the container; the codec is what actually determined the file size and where it will play. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. An HLS stream is an .m3u8 manifest pointing at a ladder of H.264 or HEVC segments at several bitrates, so the player can switch quality mid-playback.
Is the MKV to HLS converter free?
+
Yes — basic MKV → HLS conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
How big an MKV file can I convert to HLS?
+
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per MKV file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the MKV source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the HLS format allows.
Will conversion change the content of my MKV?
+
Conversion preserves all information that both MKV and HLS can represent. Format-specific features that the HLS format doesn't support (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — see the format-specific notes on the result page.
Can I convert many MKV files to HLS at once?
+
Yes — drop multiple MKV files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Does the MKV to HLS converter work on phones and tablets?
+
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Which browsers does the MKV to HLS converter support?
+
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers work.
Are my MKV files kept private?
+
Yes — uploaded MKV files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window.
What if the HLS download doesn't start automatically?
+
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network fails mid-download, you can re-trigger from the result page without re-uploading the MKV.
How long does MKV to HLS conversion take?
+
Typically seconds for small files, a minute or two for files near the size cap. Server-side pipeline runs on dedicated workers — your laptop CPU isn't the bottleneck.
HLS breaks a video into short segments plus a playlist so a player can switch quality mid-stream, which is why it arrives as many files rather than one.
