Will the DOC reflow properly on a phone or e-reader?

That is the main thing you gain. An SVG has fixed pages, so a small screen either shrinks the whole page or forces horizontal scrolling. The DOC stores text as text, so the reader re-wraps it to any screen width and font size. Multi-column layouts and large tables are where reflow struggles — those are the parts worth checking after conversion. DOC is still the format a great many corporate templates, legal precedents and government forms are stored in.
Will the DOC be properly editable?

Yes — that is the point of converting out of SVG. The output opens as a real document with live paragraphs, styles and tables rather than a frozen page image, so you can edit it directly instead of retyping. Heavily designed source layouts convert less cleanly than plain prose, so expect to tidy spacing on anything built on a complex grid.
Is the older binary Office format still a safe bet?

It opens everywhere, but it is a compatibility choice rather than a good one. The binary formats predate the XML packages, carry macro payloads that many mail servers strip on sight, and are being steadily deprecated by Microsoft itself. Use them when a specific piece of old software demands them, and the XML format otherwise. DOC is undocumented in practice, opaque to modern tooling, and Microsoft itself has been trying to retire it since 2007.
What if the source is a scan with no real text in it?

Then the conversion produces a picture of the text rather than the text itself, and searching it finds nothing. Run /pdf-ocr/ to add a recognised text layer first; optical character recognition turns the scanned pixels into selectable, searchable characters that the conversion can then carry through properly.
What happens to transparent areas of my SVG in the DOC?

They are composited against the page, which is white by default, so a transparent background becomes a white one. If the image is meant to sit on a coloured page, set the matte colour before converting rather than trying to fix it afterwards in the document.
Should I place the SVG straight into the DOC or export it first?

Export it first if the document is going anywhere but your own machine. An SVG is a working file from a design tool, and the things that make it useful there — editable text, effects, references to assets that live elsewhere — are flattened or ignored the moment it is placed in a page. Exporting deliberately means choosing how it is flattened instead of discovering it later, and it usually produces a much smaller document as well. SVG is the W3C’s XML-based vector format, a recommendation since 2001 and now native to every browser.
