Pick the largest size you will ever display it at, because this is the step where the file stops being resolution-independent. An SVG is stored as mathematical paths and renders sharp at any size; the JPG is a fixed pixel grid, and enlarging it afterwards can only interpolate. Export at twice the intended display size if it is headed for a high-DPI screen. SVG renders perfectly at any size, stays editable, is searchable and diffable as plain text, and is usually a fraction of the size of an equivalent PNG. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
No — JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the SVG as the master and regenerate the JPG from it whenever you need a new size. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
In an SVG, text is real text — selectable, searchable and re-styleable, and it needs the font to be available or embedded to render as intended. Converting away from SVG turns that text into pixels or into document text depending on the target; converting towards SVG only produces real text if the source had a text layer to begin with.
Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of JPG.
Embedded ICC color profiles are read from the source SVG and re-attached to the JPG output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB.
Camera EXIF (ISO, shutter, lens, GPS) is preserved by default during SVG → JPG conversion when both formats support metadata. Use the privacy option to strip metadata before download if you want to share images without geolocation.
