How do I convert JPG to GIF without losing image quality?

Can I get transparency once the image is GIF?

The GIF format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel GIF provides has something to store. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation.
Does converting JPG to GIF restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPG are ordinary pixel data now, and GIF preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to GIF?

It is converted to sRGB, because GIF has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPG rather than the GIF. GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4.
Does the GIF keep the EXIF data from my JPG?

By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Does JPG to GIF conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of GIF.
Will my color profile (sRGB / Adobe RGB / CMYK) survive JPG to GIF?

Embedded ICC color profiles are read from the source JPG and re-attached to the GIF output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB.
What about EXIF metadata when converting JPG to GIF?
