Can I get transparency once the image is PSD?

The PSD format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PSD provides has something to store. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised.

Does converting JPG to PSD restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPG are ordinary pixel data now, and PSD preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.

Does the PSD keep the EXIF data from my JPG?

By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.

Does JPG to PSD conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of PSD.

Will my color profile (sRGB / Adobe RGB / CMYK) survive JPG to PSD?

Embedded ICC color profiles are read from the source JPG and re-attached to the PSD output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB.

What about EXIF metadata when converting JPG to PSD?

Camera EXIF (ISO, shutter, lens, GPS) is preserved by default during JPG → PSD conversion when both formats support metadata. Use the privacy option to strip metadata before download if you want to share images without geolocation.

For JPG / WebP, quality 75-85 typically gets the file 60-80% smaller than the source JPG with no visible difference at normal viewing distance. For lossless targets (PNG, TIFF), expect smaller savings — usually 5-30% via better deflate / LZW compression.
