Will the ZIP be much smaller than the Word files that went into it?

Barely smaller, and that is expected. A Word already holds its contents in compressed form, so general-purpose compression has almost nothing left to find and the archive lands within a few per cent of the total it was given. Pack it anyway for the reasons that have nothing to do with size: one file to send instead of forty, one download, one checksum, and the folder layout preserved on the way out. Output defaults to DOCX — the Office Open XML package — because it is the format current Word versions read without a compatibility warning.

Is there any point putting a Word inside a ZIP when it is already an archive?

For handling rather than for size. A Word is a ZIP container with a different extension and a required internal layout, so wrapping it in another one compresses essentially nothing — the second layer is there to bundle several files into one, to survive a mail system that mangles unusual extensions, or to stop a browser trying to open the file instead of downloading it. Unpacking gives back the original file untouched, not its insides.

What ends up inside the ZIP?

Every file you uploaded, converted where a conversion applied, with the original folder names preserved. Each member is compressed separately, so the recipient can pull one file out without unpacking the whole thing. It is the tidy way to hand somebody a batch.
