How do I convert BMP to PNG without losing image quality?

Can I get transparency once the image is PNG?

The PNG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PNG provides has something to store. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to PNG?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PNG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of BMP files to PNG at once?

What resolution and dimensions will my PNG file have?

Default behaviour is 1:1 — your PNG output has the same pixel dimensions as the source BMP. Use a separate /resize-image/ step after conversion if you need to downscale or upscale as part of the workflow.
How small can the PNG file get without visible artifacts?

For JPG / WebP, quality 75-85 typically gets the file 60-80% smaller than the source BMP with no visible difference at normal viewing distance. For lossless targets (PNG, TIFF), expect smaller savings — usually 5-30% via better deflate / LZW compression.
Are my BMP files private during conversion?

Yes. Uploaded BMP files are processed on our own servers and are never viewed or shared. Uploads and converted images are deleted automatically about 24 hours after conversion. The full privacy policy is at /privacy/.
Why is my converted PNG file bigger / smaller than I expected?

A BMP file with strong compression (e.g. heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to a lossless PNG (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content (photos compress differently from line art).
