That is the main thing you gain. A PNG has fixed pages, so a small screen either shrinks the whole page or forces horizontal scrolling. The DOCX stores text as text, so the reader re-wraps it to any screen width and font size. Multi-column layouts and large tables are where reflow struggles — those are the parts worth checking after conversion. DOCX is inspectable, diffable and readable by Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages and every modern word processor.

Heavily designed source layouts convert less cleanly than plain prose, so expect to tidy spacing on anything built on a complex grid.

Then the conversion produces a picture of the text rather than the text itself, and searching it finds nothing. Run /pdf-ocr/ to add a recognised text layer first; optical character recognition turns the scanned pixels into selectable, searchable characters that the conversion can then carry through properly.

A ZIP archive of XML parts, together with the images and fonts those parts refer to. That is why one barely shrinks when it is archived, why a damaged one can sometimes be partly recovered instead of being a total loss, and why software that is not the original application can open it at all — the layout was published rather than reverse-engineered. It is also why the extension matters more than it looks: rename it and the tools that recognise it by name stop opening it, though not a byte inside has changed. DOCX is Office Open XML, the format Word has produced by default since 2007 and an ISO standard since 2008.

Keep them at their native pixel size. A PNG is what a screen capture is saved as, and screen text is drawn one pixel thin — scale it up or down inside the document and the letterforms blur immediately, because there is no spare detail to resample from. Place the image at full size and change the page zoom instead; if it genuinely has to be smaller, re-capture the window at a smaller size rather than shrinking the picture afterwards. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.

Free conversions have a size limit per file, set by the type of file, and the page tells you when a file is over it. A paid plan removes that limit, so much larger files can be converted.
