What is an XLSX file underneath?

That is why one barely shrinks when it is archived, why a damaged one can sometimes be partly recovered instead of being a total loss, and why software that is not the original application can open it at all — the layout was published rather than reverse-engineered. It is also why the extension matters more than it looks: rename it and the tools that recognise it by name stop opening it, though not a byte inside has changed.
