How do I convert PSD to PDF for sharing or printing?

What if the source is a scan with no real text in it?

Will the PDF open directly in a browser?

Yes, and the PSD would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for PDF and none for PSD, so a PSD link forces a download while a PDF renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application. A PDF looks byte-for-byte identical on every machine and every printer, which is why contracts, invoices and academic papers all live in it.

What happens to the layers in my PSD when it goes into the PDF?

They are flattened into one picture on the way in, in the order and at the opacities the file specifies, and there is no way back — a PDF has no concept of a layer stack, so what it receives is the composite. Hidden layers are dropped rather than merged, which is worth checking first if the file has old versions of an element switched off inside it. Keep the layered original alongside the document; it is the only copy that stays editable. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised.

What happens to transparent areas of my PSD in the PDF?

They are composited against the page, which is white by default, so a transparent background becomes a white one. If the image is meant to sit on a coloured page, set the matte colour before converting rather than trying to fix it afterwards in the document.

Will the colours in my PSD shift once it is in the PDF?

Slightly, if the image is in CMYK. A PSD can carry print colour, and a document renders on a screen, so the conversion maps those inks into RGB — and the ink gamut contains deep cyans and rich blacks that a screen cannot reproduce, which come back a little duller. Images already in RGB pass through untouched. If the document is heading for a printer rather than a screen, convert late and keep the CMYK original for the press. PSD is huge, opens properly in almost nothing outside Adobe, and has to be flattened before anyone can view or print it.

Why is my PSD so much bigger than the PDF it ends up in?

Because a PSD keeps its pixel data at or near full size — that is what makes it a working format rather than a delivery one — and a document does not keep it that way. The image is re-encoded into a compressed form when it is placed, so a thirty-megabyte source can land as a two-megabyte picture with no visible difference at reading size. That is a saving rather than a loss for anything screen-bound. If the document is going to a printer, raise the placement quality before converting rather than trying to recover detail afterwards.

Will the PSD to PDF conversion keep my fonts and formatting?

Yes for text-bearing PSD (DOCX, ODT, HTML, TXT) — fonts are embedded into the PDF so the output looks identical on every viewer. Image-only PSD (JPG, PNG) just centers the image on the page; layout is N/A.

Can I merge multiple PSD files into one PDF?
